COL(R) William R. Betson was commissioned as a 2LT in Armor from the United States Military Academy in 1974. He served in the Army for 29 years, culminating his career in the Pentagon as the Special Assistant to the Assistant Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. His command assignments included Command of the US Army Garrison, Ft. Stewart, Georgia, and command of the 6 th Battalion, 40 th Armored Regiment of the Berlin Brigade. He also served as an Assistant Professor of History at WestPoint, and Senior Observer/Controller for both the Armor Task Force and the Brigade Combat Team at the National Training Center.
After retiring from the Army in 2003 he worked for seven years as Senior Consultant to the Mounted Maneuver Battle Lab here at Ft. Knox, and then returned to work for the government in the Headquarters, US Army Cadet Command, where he was a special advisor to the Commanding General.He fully retired in 2018 and is now active in his community, serving as President of local chapter of the Military Officers’ Association of America, Secretary of the local chapter of the Association of the United States Army, and Commissioner on the Vine Grove Planning and Zoning Commission. He also serves on Congressman Guthrie’s Academy Selection Board, and as a Field Force Recruiter for West Point.
COL Betson is a graduate of the US Army War College and holds Masters Degrees in History from the University of Pennsylvania, and in Military Arts and Sciences from the US Army School of Advanced Military Studies.
He has been married for 45 years to the former Donna Evans of Vine Grove. They have three children - Amber and William, who live in Vine Grove, and Andrew, who is a lieutenant colonel in the US Army. They have four grandchildren.
